SATURDAY CRITTERS - CHALLENGE -what is this animal?

For those that do not know, I am in Africa, so what animal is this for Eileen’s meme today?  I am linking this post with SATURDAY CRITTERS.

Yesterday, the gardener found a poisonous snake in the garden and of course I went out to photograph it.   He had killed it.  It was not very big and the first shots are its front and the rest are its underside.

The  other day I had gone on to scrub land as I knew there were small birds there and when I got home Judith told me about the snakes that were around so, even though I want to see and photograph birds, I am not going to be that foolish to get bitten and die!!!

Thank you for visiting and I am sure most have guessed correctly what animal the first shots was however I will give the answer on tomorrow’s post.

Many thanks for all the comments left on any of my posts.

  1. I think by the tongue the animal is a giraffe. I look forward to your other photos from Africa Margaret. I wonder what kind of snake that was.

  2. Ewww...you know, I have always thought snakes are evil. I guess because of the satan connection in Genesis. I cannot imagine what animal that is in the first picture! Just for fun I will say a giraffe.

  3. I love that first shot. Not so keen on the snakes - luckily we don't have any in NZ.

  4. I'm not sure what the mystery animal is - some kind of antelope?

I would love to know the ID of the mystery snake too! Every little critter in Africa would interest me, though I also think I'd be hesitant to walk off into the scrub alone!

  9. Snakes are never my friend, even though some will tell you how great they are at contributing to the environment. Ugh!

  10. I guess the snake might be an Atractaspis bibronii (Southern stiletto snake, Bibron's burrowing asp). Although its eyes are kind of big for that...

  13. Cool shot of the mystery animal! Thought camel/dromedary at first then noticed the pointed tongue. Going with giraffe. The snake is my favorite type of poisonous snake, dead. Had a couple on non poisonous snakes in my garden for years. Would always startle me when I would uncover them. High top boots would make adventures a little safer. Take care and continue to enjoy!

  14. I thought giraffe too. I guess the farmer knows his venomous snakes, but its little head looks harmless. I'd better stay out of Africa!

  15. I guess I would wear high boots and carry a hoe or other weapon. I like non-poisonous snakes though, I encourage them in my garden to keep down the pests.

  18. Great shots Margaret! I don't mind snakes as long as they are not venomous. Could it be a camel,... probably not, more like a giraffe.

  19. That is pretty scary! You have to be alert there, that is for sure.
There are a lot of rattlesnakes around here. They are very poisonous, but usually warn you with a rattle, before you get too close.
